In the United States, 30% to 40% of the food supply is wasted each year. With support from the state of Michigan to develop circular economy solutions, technology partners are upcycling food waste at the UTX, supporting positive health and environmental outcomes in urban centers.

Supporting a circular economy for a healthier future

An autonomous robot sourced by Orange Sparkle Ball collects food scraps from Detroit-based restaurants, taking them to the UTX to be transformed by Ecosphere Organics into products that restaurants can use. Outcomes in Detroit’s urban center include less use of landfill space, cleaner air and the recycling of material and energy resources.

Through this pilot, partners will determine the scalability of similar technologies across Michigan and the country to improve environmental and health outcomes as urban populations grow.
